The burden of aircraft noise will once again be shared more widely as Sydney Airport's east-west runway reopens on Thursday. Workers were yesterday putting the finishing touches to an 18-month, $100 million upgrade, during which the runway has been used for only five hours a day making Sydenham, Marrickville, Leichhardt, Ashfield, Canada Bay and Kurnell particularly noisy as the two north-south runways took up the slack.
